A+ Certification Training

With thousands of PCs in the home and workplace, there is a need for qualified technicians to service those machines when they need the occasional maintenance check-up. At the end of this course, students will be able to install, configure, troubleshoot, and use DOS, the Windows 9x operating system and basic administration skills for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows 2000. The student will also be able to assemble, configure, boot and troubleshoot a PC. The A+ course is divided into 2 main sections: Operating Systems and Hardware. A+ Certification qualifies the technician to effectively diagnose, repair, upgrade, and install microcomputers and the associated technologies.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify basic, concepts, and functions of system modules, including how each module works.
  • Identify basic procedures for adding and removing field replaceable modules for both desktop and portable systems.
  • Identify available IRQs, DMAs, and I/O addresses and procedures for device installation and configuration.
  • Identify common peripheral ports, associated cabling, and their connectors.
  • Identify proper procedures for installing and configuring IDE/EIDE, SCSI, and peripheral devices.
  • Identify hardware methods of upgrading system performance, procedures for replacing basic subsystem components, unique components and when to use them.
  • Identify common symptoms and problems associated with each system module and how to troubleshoot and isolate the problems.
  • Identify basic troubleshooting procedures and how to elicit problem symptoms from customers.
  • Identify the purpose of various types of preventive maintenance products and procedures
  • Identify the operating system's functions, structure, and major system files to navigate the operating system and how to get to needed technical information.
  • Identify basic concepts and procedures for creating, viewing and managing files and directories.
  • Identify the procedures for installing Windows 9x, and Windows 2000.
  • Identify steps to perform an operating system upgrade.
  • Identify the basic system boot sequences and boot methods
  • Identify procedures for loading/adding and configuring application device drivers, and the necessary software for certain devices.
  • Recognize and interpret the meaning of error codes and messages from the boot sequence.
  • Recognize common problems and determine how to resolve them.
  • Identify the networking capabilities of Windows including procedures for connecting to the network.
  • Identify concepts and capabilities relating to the Internet and basic procedures for setting up a system for Internet access.

Pre-requisites
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Workplace experience in computer hardware environment can be compensated for High School Diploma/GED with Reading/Math skills at 10th grade level as a minimum.
  • Computer literacy in PC DOS, Windows 95, and Windows 98 will be determined adequate by passing the in-house test with 70% or above provided by the school.
Instructional Methods

Instructor Led: Certified instructors teach this continuing education training program. They have practical experience having worked in the industry and bringing real world experience to the students.

Hands On Lab: Every student gets an opportunity to learn the relevant topics with hands on experience guided by the instructor during the course structure. Troubleshooting case scenarios are set up to enable students to apply what they have learned in classroom. In order to assure students' success in this program it is highly recommended that they have a computer system at home to work on lab assignments.

Study Notes: Students are provided with extra study notes and material and reference copies throughout the program. Providing industry-updated information to the students is critical who are at the brink of emerging into the job market.

Worksheet Manuals: Students are provided with worksheet manuals to guide them towards taking the certifications exams.
Testing Method

Exams: Students are provided with periodic exams to track their progress in the program.  

Quizzes: Surprise quizzes are provided during the course of the program to keep track of students’ commitment to go through the programs.

Completion Certificates Students will be provided with completion certificate from the school after completing the program with good attendance and obtaining passing score in class tests and quizzes.
Certification Exams

A+ Certification Exam should be passed at an approved Sylvan Prometric testing center to obtain certification from COMPTIA.

To maximize chances of passing the A+ Certification Exam it is suggested that students complete the exam within 1-2 weeks of completion of the course.
